NaPo/GloWriMo - Day 19

 April 19, 2023 - write a poem about something that scared you – or was used to scare you – and which still haunts you (if only a little bit) today.

Cracks

The sidewalk outside
is fractured and split
Frost has pushed it up
into small ridges
that force me to climb and descend

Spring flowers grow
between the gaps
cheerful yellow heads
poking up
a contrast with the grey, cold concrete

I pick my way slowly
down the street
careful to avoid each fracture and fault
sometimes sidestepping
to evade the cracks

You see,
I love my mother
and the flowers have not matured enough
for me to reverse the curse
with a dandelion wish
